SOUTH AFRICA
Created in 1812, Remhoogte is an estate of 60 hectares, on the south-west slope of the Simonsberg Mountain, near Stellenbosch, one of the best regions for vine growing and winemaking in South Africa.
In 1994, it was bought by Murray and Juliet Boustred who proceeded to plant 30 hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Pinotage. They began to renovate the buildings. The latest undertaking was the construction of new cellars and the installation of equipment with the help of Michel Rolland. According to the Boustreds the aim of this partnership was to add another dimension to the wines made in their estate.
Dany and Michel Rolland, who had fallen in love with South Africa, signed a partnership agreement in 2001 with Remhoogte Estate, a wine estate with great potential and with a high-quality terroir. They have solid knowledge base, particularly in relation to vineyard management and blending.
“Our aim is to produce the best quality possible by being meticulous in our cultivation and respecting the wonderful environment. The vineyard is tended by seven families who live on the estate. Pruning, harvesting and sorting are all carried out manually and we use pigeage (punching-down the cap) to obtain extraction in the gentlest possible manner”.
Ideally suited to the production of red wine. It’s also a wonderful site from where one can see Table Mountain in Cape Town on the horizon and some antelopes and zebras watching over the vineyard !
